What is an Independent Visitor?
Somebody who will be there just for you, like a special friend, and will visit you at least twice a month.
Independent visitors can take you on fun activities, help you with hobbies, listen to how you are feeling and speak up for you at your reviews. An independent visitor will always have time for you and your best interests at heart.

Who are the Independent Visitors?
They are not social workers or foster carers but volunteers. Independent visitors are ordinary people who want to help. They can be male or female, of any age above 21, and have many different qualities and hobbies. Your independent visitor will always have a similar interest to you. |
Do I get to choose my visitor and how do i get one?
Yes, you will have a big say in the sort of person you want as your special friend. You will even get a chance to meet the person before they become your visitor and decide whether or not they are right for you.
You can ask your Social Worker or Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) to refer you to the service. Or you can contact us directly and we will look into it for you. |
What will I do with my visitor?
This is up to you! Maybe you like trips to the seaside or zoo, shopping, dancing, playing games at home or in the park. You may have a special hobby or enjoy sports you can do together.
Somethimes there will be opportunities for you to do special trips together like days to London or theme parks. |
How and where do we meet?
You and your independent visitor decide what to do and where to do it. Your visitor will normally meet you in your house and then go out together from there to spend some valuable time together and have fun! |
